I pledged Delta Alpha Rho sorority during the second semester of my freshman year. The pledge process was more violent than I had imagined. When someone gets killed pledging a Black fraternity or sorority, it’s often because they were severely beaten, not by alcohol poisoning as what happens in most White Greek fatalities.

Because of lawsuits, Black Greek Letter Organizations were coming out with pledge programs intended to keep the violence out. Members would be “indoctrinated” in openly-monitored ceremonies, essentially doing away with our style of pledging.
